- Interior
Based in bustling Singapore, Right Angle Studio has built a reputation as an award-winning interior design firm that creates spaces that are both timeless and captivating. Since its inception, the firm has completed projects ranging from residential to commercial spaces, with each design infused with a unique blend of creativity and precision. The studio's services include interior consultancy, design direction, space planning and interior decoration, and their work could already enjoy global recognition.
One of their most recent and striking projects, titled ‘Resting Rights’, illustrates their ability to come up with innovative solutions to contemporary challenges. In a world where Singaporeans suffer from one of the highest rates of sleep deprivation in the world, Right Angle Studio felt the need to create a space that promotes restorative sleep. According to a recent report, Singapore ranks third out of 43 cities when it comes to sleep deprivation, highlighting the urgency of this project. ‘Resting Rights’ is a space of just 10.64 square metres, in which the studio has transcended the limitations of available resources to create an oasis of calm and rejuvenation. The design focuses on geometric purity, with each interior element precisely aligned along perpendicular axes, exuding a sense of order and tranquillity. The bed, the central element of this intimate space, is embedded in a raised platform surrounded by a pair of sleekly designed cabinets. Below the platform is a minimalist garden of desert plants and small boulders, which adds a subtle touch of nature to the space.
‘When constraints are embraced, true innovation emerges’
The details in the room have been carefully chosen to create an atmosphere of serenity and sophistication. The continuous border of Douglas fir, seamlessly integrated with Himalayan green onyx, runs throughout the room, offering a sophisticated visual transition that soothes the senses. Lighting, subtle but effective, comes from carefully placed lamps by Le Corbusier, enveloping the bed in a soft glow. Against the backdrop of delicately fluted light onyx, the simplicity of the design comes into its own.
Across the room, a Venetian plaster artwork, placed opposite a stone-textured wall, offers a serene reference to nature and embraces the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, which celebrates imperfection and impermanence. The whole forms a harmonious environment that promotes not only physical but also mental well-being. ‘Resting Rights’ is a testament to Right Angle Studio's commitment to serene rejuvenation and underscores the fundamental right to restful sleep. With this project, the agency has shown that even the smallest spaces, when designed with care and vision, can have a huge impact on human well-being.
