In the heart of London, hidden away in the prestigious Kensington district, lies a 650 sq m house that has been transformed by Banda's renowned design team into a stunning luxury home. The property, occupied by the same owner for more than 20 years, was given a new lease of life through a major renovation. Banda's brief was clear but challenging: the house had to be redesigned while maintaining a sense of homeliness, while serving as a fitting backdrop for the owner's impressive art and sculpture collection. It did not become a stately gallery, but a warm, inviting space where art enhances the atmosphere rather than dominating it. By using natural materials and a thoughtful choice of colours, the transition from inside to outside has been made as smooth as possible. The back gardens form a natural extension of the living spaces, bringing a sense of harmony and tranquillity.
One of the most striking aspects of Kensington HR is its deep connection to nature, enhanced by the colours and materials chosen. Earthy tones, rich textures and natural elements such as wood and stone create a serene and timeless interior. The dining room, for example, is a brilliant example of how colour and materials can bring a space to life. Painted in Farrow and Ball's soothing ‘Treron’ green, with handmade chairs from Brazil, it is the perfect setting for both intimate dinners and larger gatherings. The colour palette not only feels elegant and modern, but also enhances the sense of connection with the surrounding nature. The owner's art collection plays a central role in the design of Kensington HR. With works by world-renowned artists such as Tony Cragg, Andy Warhol, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, it was essential that the design of the house provided a perfect backdrop for these special pieces. Banda managed to create an interior that did not overshadow the art, but rather enhanced it.
With works by world-renowned artists such as Tony Cragg and Andy Warhol, it was essential that the design of the house provided a perfect backdrop for these special pieces.
In the living room, for instance, we find India Mahdavi's imposing ‘Jelly Pea’ sofa, upholstered in luxurious Pierre Frey velvet, a bold statement that blends harmoniously with Gormley and Indiana's artworks. The balance between art and interiors is evident throughout. The Banda team has mixed modern pieces with vintage finds to create a unique, layered atmosphere. A great example of this is the hallway, where oxidised oak by Cuff Studio is combined with mohair and cotton-blend fabric by Dedar, creating a sense of weathered luxury. Details like these show that Banda does not follow trends, but creates timeless designs that remain relevant for a long time. The cigar room, with its masculine, atmospheric look, is another masterpiece. The room exudes warmth and comfort, thanks in part to the rich hues and the original ‘Laila’ armchairs from the 1950s by Finnish designer Ilmari Lappalainen, upholstered in honey-coloured sheepskin. Unexpected finds like these add a playful dimension to the home and make the interior personal and unique.
The attention to detail is also evident in the choice of furniture pieces and lighting. Take the master bedroom, for example, where Charles Zana's luxurious Teddy Bed, upholstered in soft mohair, is the focal point. Next to it are the sculptural Formagari travertine tables, whose organic shape contributes to the serene and calming atmosphere of the room. Another highlight is the lighting in the stairwell: a custom-made Parisian ‘Rivoli’ pendant lamp by Régis Botta. Made of aluminium and brass, with a shade of mouth-blown glass, this striking lamp gives the room a subtle yet luxurious glow. The mix of modern and vintage elements, such as Finnish architect Marta Blomstedt's iconic 1939 armchair on the landing, gives the house a timeless charm. Kensington HR is just one of Banda's many impressive projects. The company is known for its versatile and bespoke interiors that bring their clients' unique vision to life. With around 40 ongoing projects worldwide, from Paris to New York to Milan, Banda remains a leader in creating spaces that are both stunning and functional. Kensington HR is a wonderful example of how art, colour and design can merge into a harmonious whole. The house exudes not only luxury, but also tranquillity, elegance and a deep connection to nature. Banda's carefully designed interior provides a perfect canvas for the impressive art collection, while maintaining a warm, homely atmosphere. The result is a timeless masterpiece that pushes and inspires the boundaries of traditional interior design.
