In Sint-Niklaas, East Flanders, where the history of flax and textiles has been in the air for generations, the family-run company Designs of the Time has been building its own story since 1998. Founded by the Puylaert family, the brand has grown into an established name in the world of high-quality interior fabrics. Its approach is clear: natural materials, authentic production techniques and an understated style that feels like a breath of fresh air in an overproduced world.
The collections include fabrics for both curtains and furniture upholstery, and are characterised by a loose, natural feel. Often linen or a linen blend forms the basis, processed with techniques that leave room for the small traces of the making process. It is precisely this textile honesty that creates a refined look without excess. There is more than just an aesthetic idea in their fabrics. Each design starts from a respect for craftsmanship and a tangible sense of timelessness. The colours are deliberately subdued, built around sophisticated palettes that whisper rather than shout. This softness in appearance is enhanced by the layered, tactile texture of the fabrics.
More than 25 years after its founding, Designs of the Time remains a family-run business, but with an international outlook
The company's roots are firmly rooted in the Belgian textile tradition, and this can be felt in everything they do. From their headquarters in Sint-Niklaas, a region historically symbolic of flax processing, they constantly seek a balance between tradition and modernity. This makes their work popular among interior designers, stylists and other creatives looking for fabrics with character.
Today, more than 25 years after its founding, Designs of the Time remains a family-run business, but with an international outlook. Their collections are shown at leading trade fairs such as Paris Déco Off, Scottish Interiors Showcase and Milan Design Week. Participating in these events is a way of staying in dialogue with a community of designers, makers and thinkers.
Although the brand does not impose itself, its impact is subtle but evident in interiors worldwide. The fabrics exude calm and sophistication, but above all, they carry a story: of attention, delay and connection to the material. This approach makes each piece relevant, regardless of trends or zeitgeist. Designs of the Time shows that textiles can be more than decoration. It becomes a carrier of atmosphere, an extension of space, and sometimes even a silent witness to everyday life. All this, woven in carefully selected yarns and shaped by hands that have mastered their craft down to the fibre.
