- Interior
In the heart of Valencia, Viruta Lab, led by David Puerta and María Daroz, presents a pioneering residential project that infuses contemporary architecture with the feminist art of the 1970s. Casa Gesso is more than a house; it is a tribute to the visionary Spanish artist Ángela García Codoñer. Challenging traditional female roles and the social norms of her time, her work is rediscovered and reinterpreted in this project as an architectural language that is as artistic as it is critical.
Casa Gesso functions as a ‘habitable blank canvas’, a platform for reflection and dialogue on García Codoñer's legacy. Her iconic series such as Morfologías, Misses and Labores are the conceptual starting point for each space. Exposing the weight of traditionally feminine crafts and representations, these series are translated into spaces that retain the artistic and social core of her work. The interior spaces are designed with an eye for the subtle power of material and texture. The floors are covered with large-format porcelain tiles, which flow seamlessly into the bathrooms. This material, combined with the warm natural wood of bespoke furniture, creates a balance between modern minimalism and a sense of nostalgia. In the living room, the Labores series is integrated in a surprising way, turning patterns and textures evoking feminine crafts into architectural details. In this way, the living room becomes both a critique and a celebration of the role of women in art and society.
Balans tussen modern minimalisme en een gevoel van nostalgie
The façade is a masterpiece in itself.Clad in bone-coloured porcelain tiles, the design evokes memories of traditional wash houses and artists' studios. This reflects the relationship between interior and exterior and highlights themes from García Codoñer's work: the interplay between the public and the domestic, the visible and the invisible. A central courtyard brings light, ventilation and a sense of openness, enhancing the experience of contemplation.
The architectural choices - from vertical windows emphasising height and privacy to the linear staircase connecting the two volumes of the house - contribute to a space that is as functional as it is poetic. Artificial lighting, with diffused LED strips and sculptural fixtures, enhances the atmosphere of warmth and introspection. Casa Gesso is not just a house; it is a philosophical statement. It unites art, architecture and feminist criticism in a form that invites reflection and dialogue. The project shows that living spaces do not have to be merely functional or aesthetic, but can also provide a platform for questioning social norms and revaluing cultural traditions. By giving Ángela García Codoñer's ideas a physical form, Viruta Lab proves that architecture can be a powerful medium for social and artistic transformation. It is a house that embraces its inhabitants with a message: beauty and meaning can go hand in hand.
