In Oku-Shibu, a district of Tokyo, the TRUNK hotel posits the idea of urban recharge. Amid the urban bustle, guests arrive in an array of contrasts. Architecture and nature find their way to each other, while European intertwines with Japanese design. This is the place to be for both relaxation and celebration.
To say Tokyo is alive is an understatement. Tradition and modernity stand side by side there, accompanied by a sophistication that nevertheless has an earthly basis. The TRUNK hotel had to mirror that diversity. The architecture relied on Keiji Ashizawa Design and the Norm Architects team took care of the interior. A total of 20 rooms and five suites spread over five floors. At the very top, a rooftop terrace is provided, overlooking the green Yoyogi Park nearby and the bustling city life. For the design and colour palette, they looked to the inherent contrasts of the metropolis. The almost brutalist structures refer to typical Japanese construction techniques and are complemented by elegant woodwork, as visible at the terraces. Lush green vegetation makes its way across the concrete facades, bridging the distance between the exterior and the natural elements around. Inside, the team opted for wooden flooring and soft carpets. The latter are also custom-made and were inspired by the traditions of national architecture. There are clearly defined zones, with furniture arrangements that together form a coherent floor plan. The furniture was also created specifically for the hotel. By deliberately using local materials and collaborating with indigenous craftsmen, the project became a succession of conscious design and responsible decisions.
A peaceful place amidst the daily chaos of the city
Simplicity is wealth here. Only a limited number of colours grace the interior, and overall you experience a soft aesthetic that clearly has its roots in minimalism. In addition, biophilic design takes centre stage. This term refers to the idea that you can promote both physical and mental well-being by bringing nature and architecture close together. Although the hotel is located in the hustle and bustle of a metropolis, it is not impossible to find a source of relaxation and pause there. On the contrary, the entire concept relies on the aim of being a peaceful place amidst the daily chaos of the city. Guests can fully come to themselves and reflect, but there is just as much opportunity to connect with each other. In the evenings, the rooftop pool club offers a memorable ambience. A fire pit and the Tokyo skyline offer your evening a great backdrop, good for engaging conversations and moments that will stay with you for a long time. No superfluous interiors here, but a purity and experience that is good for body and mind. This is also to the credit of the collaboration between the various parties. By analysing the hotel's philosophy with insight, the designers managed to reduce the essence to a tangible result. The TRUNK hotel in Tokyo has everything you desire from an introspective stay in an agile location. Japanese traditions are blended with European influences, resulting in a successful fusion.
