In an age where mass production and globalisation seem to be the norm, Belgian craftsmanship remains a symbol of quality, refinement and dedication. It is a tradition passed down from generation to generation, with the hands and minds of craftsmen playing an essential role in maintaining Belgian identity on the international stage.
Craftsmanship is deeply embedded in Belgian culture. It is an art form that has been refined with love and care over centuries. From the artful forgings of medieval masters to the refined wooden furniture of today, Belgian craftsmen have always strived for perfection. The result is a tradition of craftsmanship that continues to be perfected over the years. With the rise of industrial production and the relocation of many companies abroad for the sake of cost savings, the focus on craftsmanship may have lost some visibility in some sectors. Yet there are numerous Belgian companies determined to keep their production local. These companies choose quality over quantity and try to constantly invest in knowledge and craftsmanship. Their products are much more than mere objects; they reflect tradition, care and the pride of artisans. What makes our Belgian craftsmen so special is their ability not only to preserve their craft, but also to renew and refine it.
Honouring the Belgian masters who dedicated their lives to their creations
To celebrate the uniqueness of these craftsmen and their work, we decided to capture these treasures in two exceptional books: Belgian Craftsmanship I and Belgian Craftsmanship II. These books are more than just a collection of images or a listing of companies; they are tributes to the Belgian masters who have dedicated their lives to creating beautiful objects and spaces. For these books, we have made a very precise selection of the best craft companies in Belgium. Each company is highlighted in detail and their specific craftsmanship is highlighted in detail. We have chosen high-quality paper and a sophisticated design to ensure that the contents of the books are appreciated in the same way as the work presented in them. Each book is a tangible reminder of the value of craftsmanship and the dedication it takes to create something special. What makes these books so unique is that they show not only the products made by these artisans, but also the stories and philosophies that drive them. Each company has its own story of perseverance, dedication and innovation. It ranges from very unique carpets from JOV, for those looking for the most refined and remarkable rugs, to very high quality interior and custom work from GDC Concept. The latter concentrates on bespoke woodwork that significantly enhances an interior. They rightly consider their craftsmanship a form of art. Built-in wardrobes that make life easier, a kitchen where you enjoy spending time, a wardrobe where you can show yourself at your best every day and more are the recurring pillars in their portfolio. What is special about their approach is that they never deviate from the great dedication and attention with which they work. Another Belgian pride is Ghent-based Atelier Nilsen. They are known for their handmade and sophisticated furniture in their favourite material mortex. Steve Nilsen is a visionary craftsman emerging from three generations trapped by design. What distinguishes his work is the naturalness of his pieces and the soft lines they draw. These three experts are just a small sample of the selection that took their place in one of the books. Belgian Craftsmanship I & II are therefore much more than reference works; they are inspirational documents that underline the enduring value of Belgian craftsmanship. Belgian craftsmanship is a living tradition, ever-changing but always true to its roots. The creativity and skill of our craftsmen deserve to be celebrated and protected, because they are the heart and soul of the Belgian design and manufacturing sector. Thanks to the hard work of these craftsmen and the efforts to document their work in both books, we can proudly say that the heritage of Belgian craftsmanship will inspire many generations to come.
