In the heart of Lisbon, on the historic Rua de São Bento, Studio Gameiro has unveiled their latest masterpiece, ‘Vault’. This integrated residential project, covering an area of about 157 m², is not just a renovation; it is a profound architectural experiment that embraces the city's rich history while exploring new dimensions of beauty and functionality.
Studio Gameiro's approach to architecture and design is rooted in a deep appreciation for history, culture and local craftsmanship. This philosophy is fully reflected in their latest project where the past is not only honoured but also transformed into a living, breathing element of modern design. For the studio, each project is an opportunity not only to create a physical space, but also to create a dialogue between old and new, between what was and what can be. Here we see how this dialogue takes shape through the subtle and respectful way in which historical elements are integrated into a contemporary context.
The ambition not just to create a home, but to tell a story
A tribute to the timeless principles of craftsmanship, contextual design and the subtle power of materials, Vault offers a renewed perspective on how spaces can be experienced. Rua de São Bento is not just another street; it is a living monument to Lisbon's vibrant history and creative energy. This street has seen the coming and going of people, ideas and cultures over the centuries, and the team projects this dynamism into the design. The project arose from the ambition not just to create a home, but to tell a story - a story deeply rooted in the city's history, while embracing a contemporary and visionary future.
The São Bento arch, which plays a central role in the design, is more than an aesthetic element; it is a symbol of continuity and connection. Studio Gameiro's team used this arch not only to define spaces, but also to tell a story about resilience, transformation and the power of architecture to bridge time and space. This idea of connection is crucial in the studio's design philosophy, where every line, curve and material is carefully chosen to create a harmonious whole that invites the user to become part of the story.
Studio Gameiro has always been a master at playing with materials, tone and textures, and Vault is no exception. The use of Moleanos limestone and brass throughout the apartment is not only a nod to Lisbon's heritage, but also a testament to the studio's ability to elevate materials into something unique and contemporary. Stone, with its robust and earthy qualities, is everywhere: in the arches, kitchen worktops, and sinks. This creates a sense of continuity and stability, as if the space itself is an extension of the street outside.
