We have written before about the innovative Austrian design studio Precht, founded by Chris Precht and his wife Fei. Recently they presented a new project, again inspired by the concept of modular building. According to Precht, this is the ideal way to build quickly, efficiently and with minimal impact on the environment — after all, the prefabricated modules are built elsewhere and simply assembled on-site.
Just as many other architects like to be inspired by art, the latest concept from Studio Precht also refers to well-known cultural icons. In this case however, the icons can be found in popular culture rather than in the art history of the Renaissance. The cartoon figures from Sesame Street and the little helpers with distinctive eye-goggles from the Despicable Me series, the Minions, formed the basis of 'Bert'. "As architects, no matter if young or old, we have an inner child that looks at the world with playfulness and curiosity," explains Fei Tang Precht. Bert invites you to look at architecture and nature through the eyes of children.
Modular houses inspired by the idea of a cartoon character
“We took a playful look at this project and wanted to create a rather unique character than a conventional building. A quirky looking character that becomes part of the wildlife of a forest. I think this quirkiness can create feelings and emotions. And maybe these are attributes in architecture that are missing these days,” explains the studio. The concept of a tree house, shaped by the surrounding nature, means that there is only a minimal footprint. All the functions of the house are on top of each other and take the form of a tree trunk that has small bulges in different directions. The concept itself allows to be extended to larger houses or even hotels and communities.
Because Bert is a modular system, it can easily be adapted to the wishes of the customer and there is a clear transparency regarding the cost price and time schedule. The first modules should be developed in spring 2020, in collaboration with Baumbau (a start-up specialised in small houses and tree houses). We are already looking forward to a retreat in one of them, to relax after a busy period and to let ourselves be inspired by all the natural beauty.
