Visualisations are not a new concept for our readers. The American Notion Workshop focuses on realistic images that tell a story and from the first moment convince you of the design. We are showing a small selection of their projects and asked them about their way of working and the road they have already travelled.
In 2018, Daniel and Alaina Temple felt that the American market still offered many possibilities for an experienced company that makes high-quality renderings. The couple has a background in architecture and noticed that such images were becoming increasingly popular, but often lacked realism and storytelling. Before, Daniel had his own store, where he produced cabinets, windows, doors, and furniture for high-end projects, after which he studied architecture and taught himself to turn his ideas into visualisations. After several jobs in which he used those skills, he was looking for the next challenge. Setting up his own business turned out to be the most logical conclusion, and the company was named Notion Workshop. With her background as an architect, Alaina was actively involved from the start, but it was only after some time that the duo really turned it into a family business. The fact that the two do everything themselves of course guarantees a very personal approach. Their extensive knowledge of the field is another advantage. With their work, they want to make people curious for the real design and show them the unique aspects of the architecture and its surroundings. Daniel and Alaina consider visualisations to be an art form in itself, that just like photography captures a space, time, and a pattern of light and shadow which informs and intrigues. Photography is often used as a reference, whereas film provides a lot of inspiration. Their images have to tell a story, and sometimes that only becomes obvious in the details they want to conceal. These make it clear for them which parts should grab the attention, and which should not.

Since their foundation, Notion Workshop already worked together with well-known architects from all over the United States. To deliver the best results, the duo needs a form of artistic freedom. The process usually starts by listening to the designers’ story: what do they want to highlight, and which materials should attract the most attention? With this information, they create a 3D environment. The aim is to deliver a design that does not only convince the clients, but that can also serve for marketing purposes. Visualisations are indeed often used to attract new projects and give a good idea of the aesthetics a designer wants to convey. Many beautiful projects already crossed their path, and for the near future, Notion Workshop has a number of extraordinary collaborations on their list. A personal approach, tons of experience, and the ambition to give all images their own identity characterise their work. The renderings in this article prove that that approach is very successful.
