Mornington Peninsula in Australia is a great location to build a house. The architecture studio Davidov did so with LPS Residence, a grand project on the site of the residents their original home. After having grown out of it, the time had come to start a new chapter. The result is an architectural gem that consists of interconnected volumes.
Robert Davidov is the face of his eponymous studio. Material, light, and space are his favourite components to knead into a successful design. In the past, already a wide variety of commissions has passed the revue, where a strong relationship with the client always played a key role. By figuring out their motivations and singularity, he and his team are able to bring out the full potential out of every location. Concerning style, they consider their portfolio to belong to warm minimalism. This project confirms this again. LPS Residence is a family home that is the result of experimenting with proportions and developing thoughtful connections. The vineyards around the property are a dominant aspect of the views. Therefore, the architect provided several openings that look out on this big asset, although he was also conscious of the need for sufficient enclosure. Namely, the house needed to conjure feeling of protection and cherishment as well. Ochre-coloured cement was another handy instrument for this. By applying this both on the outdoor and indoor walls, the entire building was truly submerged in a rustic syrup.

The rather coarse plastering found a good companion in the accents from solid wood for the visible rafters, the screen doors, and the joinery. Together, these materials function as a steady base for a familiar ambience. Polished concrete was added to the selection, and more specifically you can notice it at the details of, among others, the kitchen island and the bathroom vanities. To give the surrounding agriculture an own interpretation, these elements were also instilled to their raw version and then finished with the concrete. The rural life is omnipresent in this project. Concerning the construction of the home, the main premise was the initial decision to work around three individual building forms, these being the sleep, living, and dining areas. The factor that unites these different volumes is the central courtyard. Inside, the calm shades come to life because of the play of the entering sunrays, which are being filtered beforehand by the several openings and put the interior under a veil of light honey. This rather intimate idea is given a strong but fruitful contrast when you look at the house from outside and let the appearance of the whole speak to you. The unneglectable size of the design confirms that it more than lives up to the idea of a family home and, even more, that the residents can all retreat in diverse spots. LPS Residence rekindles anyone’s love for stately architecture with a renewed fire. This family home in Australia will still resonate in your memory for a long time thanks to the awe-inspiring volumes and the genial way they respond to one another. There is no doubt that we will in the future keep on following the further journey of Davidov with a lot of dedication.
