In South Yarra, a suburb of Melbourne, stands the ambitious and bold boutique apartment complex Stanhope. Visualisation agency MR.P joined forces with world-renowned Swedish design firm Lotta Agaton. Not only was the skyline of South Melbourne transformed, but they also created a timeless work of art that is both classic and contemporary.
The architecture is distinguished by bold elements and sleek finishes of reflective metals and ribbed glass. These choices are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also speak to the surrounding context of South Yarra. The reflections of the trees and green spaces in the fluted glass anchor the building in the vast landscape, making it an integral part of the natural environment. MR.P founded and led by Phil Horton and his team of highly skilled artists is based in Melbourne, Australia, and works with a diverse selection of clients from different fields - both local and international. When designing Stanhope, their vision was very clear: to create a timeless piece of architecture that both enriches the living environment and stands the test of time. Subtle references to classical architecture are integrated into the design, with a restrained use of high-quality materials that age naturally. As a result, it remains relevant and expressive even as time passes.
The design remains relevant and expressive even as time passes
The vertical rhythm of the façade gives the complex a human scale and harmonises with its surroundings. The deliberate glazing and full-height windows maximise the connection with the natural environment and bring in the serene beauty of South Yarra. The sustainable palette and understated aesthetic continue. Natural materials, such as high-quality solid wood and handcrafted sand-coloured stone, form the core of the interior spaces. The eight residences, designed in collaboration with Lotta Agaton, embrace an open floor plan and are centred around an imposing stone sculptural bench. These spaces exude modernity but with the promise of natural ageing, making them timeless in their expression. The result is a harmonious symbiosis between modernity and timeless elegance. The commitment to sustainability is evident in both the design and choice of materials. It is not just an architectural statement, but a conscious effort to take responsibility for the extended environment. It is not just a building; it is a beautifully considered object that enriches the experience and life of its occupants. With a balance between bold innovation and subtle elegance, Stanhope invites everyone to experience the beauty of life in this timeless oasis in Melbourne.
