- Interior
When two likeminded people cross paths, more than only a personal relationship can grow out of it. Heaps & Woods is a passion project that fully adheres to this description, because the lives of the founders intersected years ago in Indonesia and have not split since. Today, they are at the helm of a business with which they transform their common obsession with iconic design into collections consisting of furniture, lighting, and decoration.
Together, Louis Chagnaud and Marta Jurado are on a mission to create objects that move towards a long life and fit in with any interior. Important in their philosophy is travel. They love to search for the aesthetic singularity of different cultures and have a soft spot for tradition. At the same time, they always listen to nature’s call. This attention clearly translates into their designs. They do not merely call themselves designers; instead, they consider their work a desire to examine and to explore. All of this began years ago in Bali, where Chagnaud was living at the time to learn the local carpentry techniques and Jurado was on a vacation to experience the spiritual culture and breathtaking nature. What started as a private relationship later also evolved into their professional collaboration. The journey that they have already covered until today is, to say the least, impressive.
In each project, they strive for a universal timelessness
The brand's artisan collections are the result of valuable connections with craftspeople. They had already started to build these relationships in Bali and later in Barcelona as well. Driven makers, creative collaborations, and a clientele spread out over the entire world: they have it all by now. Of course, the founders need to thank themselves and their mutual coordination just as much for their success. While Chagnaud is a born entrepreneur, maintaining and strengthening the several connections, Jurado is the creative responsible for the emotional and esthetical direction of the business. The two complement each other exactly where needed. Essential to them is the sincerity with which they stand behind their core values. A few examples of this are authenticity, honesty, and quality. Next to this, they see details as a sign of craftsmanship and they aim for a universal timelessness with each design. Heaps & Woods' activities contain a surprising variety: they sell their own collections, produce unique pieces for private clients and focus on larger-scale projects, partnering with architects, designers and companies. They try to make every idea a reality in the best possible way. Yet there are clear constants that ensure you can instantly recognise their hand. Earthy colours and a pervasive loyalty to natural materials are the two most important of these. Specifically, their portfolio shows a preference for rattan and wood. With their objects, they mainly want to make a space more interesting and give it a unique touch resulting from responsible techniques. When using fabrics, for example, they will use plant and fruit colouring. To guarantee the best results, they decided from the start to have materials processed in the regions that are optimal for them.
