- Interior
Since 2009, Julie van De Keere and Mathieu Luyens have created a vision with JUMA architects that revolves around the perfect balance between functionality, beauty and cost efficiency. This balance, intertwined with their deep understanding of the client, is at the heart of every project they tackle. The personal contact between architect and client is essential to them and acts as the foundation for the design. This relationship is the blueprint for what ultimately becomes a harmonious fusion of emotion and design, both in interiors and exteriors.
A great example of their approach is their most recent project: the extension of an existing farmstead. Here, JUMA architects added a new volume positioned at right angles to the existing structure, creating a visual and functional connection between old and new. This strategic addition serves not only to expand the space, but also to create a buffer between the driveway and the garden. This architectural intervention provides the necessary privacy for the residents and allows different zones to be clearly demarcated.
The new extension respects the formal language of the original farmstead, creating a coherent whole. Both parts, the authentic and the new, share a simple rectangular ground plan with a modest gabled roof. Although the design is in keeping with the existing building, the new volume is clearly distinguished by the choice of materials. The black façade and roof cladding of the new section, made of wood, is given a striking rhythm thanks to the specific profiling in which an additional beam is added every three planchets. This refined detailing gives the building an understated luxury typical of JUMA architects' signature.
Its new volume respects the past while paving the way for modern elegance
Inside the extension is the living area of the house. Thanks to the large windows, residents can take full advantage of the natural light and views of the garden. This contrast with the farmhouse, which houses the sleeping quarters and associated functions, offers a harmonious balance between traditional and modern. The authentic charm of the farmstead is preserved, while the clean lines and pared-down details of the new architecture add a fresh, contemporary feel. This subtlety in design reflects the company's core values of understated luxury and thoughtful layering.
JUMA architects have combined the best of both worlds with this project. Residents enjoy the rustic atmosphere of the original farmhouse and the modern elegance of the new extension. This project beautifully illustrates how JUMA's approach of personal commitment, attention to detail and respect for the existing leads to a timeless design that shines both functionally and aesthetically.
