Located within dense greenery and mountain landscapes in Emeishan, ZOLAND · Emei Resort is a boutique retreat designed as a place of reflection and reconnection. The former decayed buildings were carefully transformed into a tranquil sanctuary that seamlessly connects architecture with its natural surroundings. Rather than overpowering the landscape, the resort gently settles into it, creating a calm atmosphere perfect for guests to slow down and fully embrace their surroundings.
The project was designed by Studio J. Bridgland, founded by Jaycee Chui and Justin Bridgland. Established in 2018, the studio works internationally across architecture, interiors, and product design. With professional backgrounds rooted in the UK and China, the founders bring refined cross-cultural insights into their projects. Their philosophy focuses on designing spaces that respond to the emotional needs of guests. At ZOLAND · Emei, this approach results in a landscape-first design that allows nature to take the lead.
The resort consists of seven villas arranged in a staggered, village-like composition that echoes traditional stone architecture found on the hillside. Classic pitched roofs and deep eaves are reinterpreted in a contemporary manner, blending both heritage and modern design. The exterior remains simple and natural. One building is clad in light stone, while the other has a darker, almost black finish. The rectangular structure is softened by large windows that frame the beautiful views of the forest and mountains. An ancient Zhennan tree at the center of the property, encircled by a stone pool, serves as the silent guardian of the resort. An outdoor meditation pit further emphasizes the project’s focus on relaxation and quietude.
The entire resort is equipped with floor-to-ceiling glazing that dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, strengthening the connection to nature even from within
Inside, the rooms are carefully balanced with light and dark tones. Beige and cream colors dominate the bedrooms, visible in the beds, walls, curtains, and sofas. These soft hues are contrasted by dark wooden ceilings and black accents that add depth into the structure. The bathrooms are finished in deep red local stone and dark brown detailing, with bathtubs oriented toward the forest to enhance the connection to nature. Local craftsmanship is showcased in the dining hall, which is furnished with black tables and chairs. Floor-to-ceiling glazing covering the entire resort dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, strengthening the connection to nature even from within. The resort also features an impressive wine cellar with delicious wines for guests to enjoy.
ZOLAND · Emei is a retreat deliberately designed for slowing down, mindfulness, and relaxation. With its careful material choices, restrained palette, and seamless integration with the surrounding forest and mountains, the resort creates a serene, immersive environment. Every detail channels nature, inviting guests to unwind, notice their surroundings, and reconnect with nature and their inner selves.
