- Art & Design
Edith Beurskens is a visual creative based in Amsterdam. Her work is mainly focused on both graphic design and interior design. After years of working for different brands, she decided to go freelance. Creating her own artworks has been a lifelong dream that has now become reality.
Both graphic and interior designer as freelance artist, Edith Beurskens creates unique 3D artworks that are suitable for every home. Her creations made of the vegetable material PLA are finished with a sand plaster on top and then painted in cream, brown or off-white. In the future, she would like to expand to more varied colours, such as lilac or old rose.
You use plant material. Does this allow you to express yourself more creatively?
‘For me, the material and its properties are not necessarily the reason to design it this way. I look more at the possibilities that I have in mind for a certain design, and I happened to start working with the vegetable material PLA. The fact that this is a material made from the remains of plants is, in my opinion, a great added value. It certainly fits the spirit of the times.’ What do you like most about the creative process?
‘Being able to come up with a solution based on a problem with just a few ingredients. When I then have an idea that really excites me, that really gives me a kind of happy feeling. New ideas often flow from this as you go along, which means that you continually develop in the creative process.’
How do you hope your work will develop creatively in the coming year?
‘I want to test several new materials and techniques that are linked to new forms and styles. For example, think about printing with sand or casting into shapes.’ Finally, what is the best advice you have ever received?
‘I have definitely received several good pieces of advice. First of all, the little tile that hangs on my grandmother's wall: 'He who makes no mistakes, makes nothing'. Also from my yoga teacher: 'You are not your thoughts, let them pass'. But my very best advice to myself and that I like to share with others: Trust your own strength, only do things that give you energy and keep doing them. If you're on the right path, you'll feel that and the energy will keep flowing!’ Want to know more about Edith Beurskens? Read the full article in Imagicasa Real Estate Winter 2021.
