The Spanish studio GCA Architects created a single-family new home in an exceptional location in the inland of the Costa Brava. The house was designed in harmony with the surrounding nature.
The main challenge of the project was to adapt the building to the terrain, minimising the visual and environmental impact of the project. The house is located on the highest part of the site and takes advantage of the undulating topography and sparse forestation. House in Costa Brava is located on the edge of the Les Gavarres forest and therefore enjoys beautiful views and an intimate connection with the outdoor space, which is characterised by lush indigenous vegetation.
The house has an intimate connection with the outdoor space.
The house consists of two main volumes: the first houses the living room and day rooms, the second the bedrooms. These two volumes are connected by half-levels that are reached via the main staircase, so that the transitions in the house always take place in a comfortable and natural way. Combining the spaces by means of controlled heights gives the house a proportional scale and allows it to adapt optimally to the topography. A large sloping roof of Arabic tiles covers both volumes and gives the whole a compositional unity of great character. The large windows in the living room emphasise the harmony between the house and the surrounding nature. The outdoor spaces are structured by the terraces, which give the surrounding area the appearance of farmland.
To achieve a harmonious and respectful integration with the environment, natural materials typical of the region were used in the development of the project, such as natural stone, limestone plaster, recovered Arabian tiles and wood. Photography by Del Rio Bani
