In the bustling heart of Tribeca, New York City, stands an architectural masterpiece, a bold triplex that offers challenges and possibilities at every corner. Interior design firm Jae Joo Designs was tasked with transforming this raw concrete space into a sophisticated oasis of elegance and warmth. With ceilings reaching up to 21 feet and a desire for a neutral color palette, the plywood could have easily become ensnared in the cold clutches of sterility. But Joo, a master at creating spaces that are both chic and cozy, took on this challenge with a thoughtful approach and a keen eye for detail.
The location of the triplex is not just any place; it is located in Tribeca, a dynamic neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, steeped in history and now home to coveted residences amid luxury high-rises and scenic outdoor spaces. The building commands attention with its bold architecture and bluestone-clad facade, an aesthetic leitmotif that permeates the interior. For interior designer Jao Joo, the architecture of the triplex itself was a source of inspiration. The clean lines and textures of Brutalism, combined with the desire for a seamless confluence of forms, motivated her to approach the design process with extra care and detail. The result is a timeless canvas, a soothing environment that not only provides comfort but also provides a stage for unlimited creativity. The clients, who approached Joo four years ago for help designing and renovating this triplex, had more in mind than just aesthetics. They wanted a space that was not only beautiful, but could also accommodate the different stages of their family growth. The team felt not only the beautiful space, but also the love and kindness of the family, which inspired them to create a design that reflected their solid foundation.
Joo aimed for a sense of surreality by adding fluid, freeform elements, allowing the house to escape sterility and compactness
With a desire for a neutral color palette, Joo set out to maintain calm, while still adding character and depth. Materials such as metal, stone and plaster were carefully combined, with the choice of materials with patina adding a historical dimension to the surfaces. The space exudes a raw aesthetic, enhanced by features such as the curved staircase, stacked concrete ceilings and textured columns. The introduction of new elements was a delicate dance to seamlessly integrate with the existing architecture. Joo aimed for a sense of surreality by adding fluid, freeform elements, allowing the house to escape sterility and compactness. With three bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms and an abundance of architectural features, including three private terraces, an impressive sculptural staircase and a harmoniously integrated fireplace, the triplex is a living work of art. One of the most intriguing aspects of this project was the art. Over the years, Joo and the homeowners have continually discussed and invested in new works of art. The space is now decorated with exceptional contemporary pieces, including works by artists such as R.H. Quaytman, Rebecca Morris and Claudio Parmiggiani. These works of art bring vibrant colors and vitality, really bringing the space to life. The result of this project is not just a transformed triplex; it is a refined symphony of design, history and personality, a true source of inspiration for those who enter it.
