Oostende & Compagnie (Lannoo)
"Ostend was paradise," says Arno Hintjes, the Ostend singer who celebrates his 70th birthday next week. It's also seven decades since the artist James Ensor died. Another icon that is inextricably linked to the popular seaside city. And there are many others like them. That's why Claude Blondeel, a cultural fanatic and former radio presenter, brought together the stories of 60 figures in a book. People who could not resist the call of Ostend and saw the city as their 'mild muse'. Oostende & Compagnie: Van Arno tot Zweig is a 224-page journey through times and tides, with never-before-seen visual material.
As the biggest muse among the Belgian seaside resorts, Ostend has a lot of stories to tell.
Léon Spilliaert, Marvin Gaye and Hugo Clause could not be left out either. And even the cover is entirely in theme. Created by artist Herr Seele and inspired by Ensor's well-known masterpiece The Entry of Christ into Brussels (1888), we see a parade with Arno and co through Ostend.
Anyone who, like us, is a big fan of the ‘Queen of the Belgian sea-side resorts’ will be able to buy this book from next week onwards. You can already listen to some stories for free via visitoostende.be
