We talked about the beautiful spaces that Mim Design creates before, but we like to show it again, and this time we do so with their project Coastal Pavilion. This coastal house has an authentic and timeless design, where contrasting elements still create a harmonious feeling.
Coastal Pavilion, designed by the Australian design studio Mim Design, is not just a weekend retreat or a seaside escape. It is a personalised home that is fully tailored to the needs of its residents. The original wooden house was demolished to make way for this family residence, which blends mid-century modern and coastal influences in an authentic and timeless design. The new residence is also an ideal showcase for the client's own furniture and decor business. The architectural form consists of a series of interconnected pavilions, oriented in such a way to reflect the light and the view beautifully. The house draws its beauty from contrasting elements, with a deliberate combination of soft and striking materials, shapes and textures creating a harmonious feel. Zinc, for example, strikes a fine balance with charred wood, and painted brick offers a textured alternative to concrete.
The neutral colour palette creates a spatial connection.
Upon entering, you step into a semi-open hallway that reveals different levels of the house and showcases aspects that connect inside to outside. From a private sanctuary in the front to a large relaxation area in the back, the neutral and subdued colour palette creates a spatial connection and uninterrupted flow in the house, while also creating a sense of warmth.
The home is decorated with everyday objects that serve as works of art. Combined with pieces from the client's own furniture shop, the home acquires more sentiment and personality. For example, a soft powder blue surfboard points to the mezzanine bedrooms, tucked between the private room on the top floor and the entertainment room below. The study overlooks the pool and garden, ideal for residents who work from home. In the kitchen, an oversized pendant lamp is in perfect balance with the stone kitchen island below. The curvature of the island and the size of the lamp are precisely matched, an example of Mim Design's superior attention to detail.
Designed with timeless style and ditto appeal, Coastal Pavilion aims to enhance the lives of its residents who seek a balance between family and business in an idyllic setting. Photography by Tom Blachford
