Tulum, home to many architectural and design gems, has yet another stunning realisation. Casa Areca, a project by local studio CO-LAB Design Office, serves as a holiday home and is completely surrounded by greenery. The local wood and the soft colour palette create a peaceful and warm atmosphere.
Previously, you could admire a beautiful and summery project, designed by the Tulum-based design studio CO-LAB Design Office. Casa Areca is one of their latest realisations, which is hidden in a lush landscape of gold palms, also called Areca (thus, the house did not steal its name). In order to preserve these trees, the house was deliberately built on a narrow plot. Casa Areca was designed as a holiday home. On the first floor, there are four bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. Thus, the ground floor could be completely opened up. The kitchen, dining room and living room are open to the outside thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass doors that can be pushed aside or turned. The terrace surrounds the pool and gardens, and a stone wall screens off the entire property.
The walls are made of concrete masonry blocks and reinforced concrete and finished with white polished cement. The floors are made of light grey polished cement and thus complement the walls perfectly. This creates a soft colour palette that contrasts beautifully with the custom-made furniture, designed by the architects and realised by Yucatan craftsmen.
Light and airy rooms are surrounded by beautiful greenery.
The wood is of local origin, with sustainable certification. It has been treated to blend in with the soft colour palette of the house, which in turn results in warmth and tranquillity. Exactly what a holiday home should radiate!
A solar panel system offsets the electricity consumption of the house and reduces carbon emissions. The windows, carefully oriented to catch the prevailing winds, keep the house cool and fresh all year round. The façade, which faces east, was cast on site against a formwork of wooden sticks. Thus, every morning the journey of the sun and the shadows can be followed here.
Light and airy rooms are surrounded by beautiful greenery. Moving shadows adorn the wall, creating a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a hot beach day.
