- Architecture & development
In Xiamen, a city in China, you can now find a wellness resort with an almost magical appearance. If the different possibilities for relaxation cannot fully calm you down, the architecture certainly will. The landscape is effortlessly drawn inside, making you feel like are in the middle of nature.
SIG Resort is an extensive complex that has existed for more than a decade. Recently, an old, desolate building was converted into a hot spring park that is partially situated outside and connects with the original park. In the inital building, a spa club was first located. Zhangzhao Lee and Qiping Huang from Sform Design transformed the space into a resort that absolutely captures the imagination.
Firstly, all non-bearing walls on the ground floor were removed. This provided more natural light and better views of the landscape. It was important to blend the indoor and outdoor landscape for a unique experience. A conscious decision was made to keep the indoor space narrow and the distance between the pools small. To still provide clients with enough privacy, each pool was placed in a partially enclosed area. Openings in the walls widen the view of the landscape and increase air circulation. Because the spaces are not arranged symmetrically, eye contact between customers is avoided and privacy is further enhanced. Plants between the different spaces strengthen the outdoor feeling.
Natural materials such as stone, bamboo, and wood emphasise unity with nature and create a holiday feeling
The starting point for the design was the karst cave (a solution of limestone in water). The park is in other words fully expanded according to that concept. Natural materials such as stone, bamboo, and wood emphasise unity with nature and create a holiday feeling. You will now find five areas on the estate: two hot water pools, a regular pool, a family pool, and a recreation area. The pools have different sizes and will be a source of enjoyment for visitors of varying ages. Finally, the atrium connects each pool to a relaxation area where you can have a drink or take a rest.
This retreat feels like a true holiday resort, where peace and tranquillity are key. The unique concept and the use of natural materials make a big impression and create a pleasant, serene experience. Want to get enchanted by more impressive projects and inspiring architecture?
