Studio Gorman transformed a beautiful Modernist house from the fifties into a contemporary, stylish home with a few winks to the past. It became an intimate and charming retreat for the owner, his family and guests to enjoy.
In the projects of the Australian Studio Gorman, the uniqueness and style of the client is central. Furthermore, founder Suzanne Gorman and her team are inspired by art, architecture, travel and ‘the wonder we see in everyday life’. The designers integrate their own inspiration and expertise into the client's wishes, creating unique, personalised, contemporary and stylish spaces each time. ‘We are passionate about curating people's journeys and telling their individual stories’.
Studio Gorman’s The Quarter Deck is a beautiful mix of past and present
One of Suzanne Gorman's wonderful projects that really stands out for Imagicasa is The Quarter Deck in New South Wales. Here the designer was commissioned to give a contemporary make over to an impressive Modernist house from 1959 in the middle of the woods. The owner wanted to expand the residence with extra rooms for his sons and guests, a cinema room, wine cellar and a renovated swimming pool. For this challenging assignment Gorman worked with Josh Allen of 8 Squared Architects. Together they created a cosy, modern and luxurious home that still exudes its original intimate charm and Modernist atmosphere.
A cosy, modern and luxurious home that exudes its original intimate charm and Modernist atmosphere
The typical residence from the fifties has some fantastic Modernist features such as the visible steel beams in the living spaces, the white brick interior walls, wooden windows and doors and the fine wired balustrades. These elements have been preserved and highlighted. For the interior Gorman was inspired by the history of the house. She let the original spaces come together nicely with the new additions designed by the architects. Furthermore, the designer brought the atmosphere of the beautiful wooded surroundings inside. ‘The location is serenity personified, the client patient and communicative, so in the end it was up to us to make it happen as we were given so much to work with,’ she says. In line with the Modernist architecture, we find clean lines, beautiful finishes and unique furniture in the interior.
At The Quarter Deck you immediately feel peace and quiet both indoors and outdoors. The residence became a perfect combination of a Modernist and contemporary style. A timeless gem!
