When one of our favourite architecture studios has a new project, we are of course in the front row to discover it. When it turns out to be their own offices, we are even more enthusiastic, because that means that the creative team has been able to go all out to create something unique.
We have already written several times about the Spanish architecture studio OOAA. Think of projects such as Salud, a monochrome apartment in Madrid, and Baleares, a warm and minimalistic summer house on Menorca. Like these two, one of their latest projects also exudes their characteristic atmosphere of tranquillity and protection. Iker Ochotorena, who founded the studio in 2011, invariably designs buildings and interiors in which simplicity, serenity and timelessness play the leading role. When he set about updating the OOAA offices last year, our curiosity about the result was already piqued. Now we can share it with you.
A space that is completely detached from its surroundings.
Located in the busy city centre of Madrid, we find this oasis of calm in the serene colour palette we are used to from OOAA. ‘My studio is composed of several spaces that satisfy my aesthetic aspirations of the last years. It is mainly composed of two big empty volumes with very tall height and overhead light which rests over the working area, the lounge area and the meeting area,'Ochotorena explains. There is a certain 'emptiness' with walls that do not allow any kind of decoration. A deliberate choice by the architect, as his intention was to design a space completely detached from its surroundings, being the Spanish capital. In contrast to the dynamic Madrid, here we are in ‘an oasis of calm’, explains the architect. For him, it is "a shelter of silence where the emptiness plays the main part’. The limestone floors and walls, hand-finished in lime, also give the architecture studio's new office space the impression of being a temple for contemplation. Or, as Iker Ochotorena describes it: ‘Where - daily - emotion must emerge’.
We are convinced that this contemplation and emotion will be expressed in even more creative ideas that we will soon be able to discover in the next realisations of OOAA Arquitectura. Images courtesy of OOAA Arquitectura
