Once again, we have a unique gem in store for you, this time in Sydney, Australia. Visualisation agency Third Aesthetic designed its first in-house project and the result is a true dream. Ø House is located right in the harbour of Sydney and draws inspiration from its surroundings. An oasis of natural light, organic curves and a stunning view of the surrounding city: it is a home like no other.
Sydney Harbour is the backdrop for many iconic architectural creations. Adding something to this impressive ensemble is therefore not without its challenges. Visualisation agency Third Aesthetic, headed by founder and creative director Mark Hunter, took on the challenge and succeeded with flying colours, as Ø House also proves.
The project is named after the Danish word for 'island'. Take a look at the photos and you will immediately understand why. The house seems to float like a lily pad in the harbour, between the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Opera House. Its organic form is in complete harmony with its surroundings. Sculptured concrete gives the house its organic curves and slender profile, while natural wood and sandstone contribute to the beautiful aesthetics of the whole. Nautical-grade glass and stainless steel create a house that is as durable as it is timeless.

Natural light and ventilation are central to the design, with tidal energy providing the house's electricity. The waste management system incorporates innovative NASA-first technologies to achieve a five-star rating from the EPA, along with certified carbon neutrality.
The roof takes inspiration from the adjacent Royal Botanic Gardens and is covered with native grevilleas, acacias and wildflowers. The successive concentric circles create a botanical amphitheatre, allowing the late afternoon sun to shine on the central courtyard. The greenery helps to insulate the house, regulate the temperature and provide filtered water for the toilets and irrigation. Upon entering, you immediately see that this is a house like no other. The house is built around a central garden and enjoys stunning 360-degree views. Ø House is flooded with natural light, with the exterior designed to follow the arc of the sun. Wherever you are in the house – the living area or one of the six spacious bedrooms – the floor-to-ceiling windows provide impressive views of the city. The circular design is reminiscent of infinity, an environment without hard edges. The outdoor courtyard that surrounds the house connects the interior spaces to the harbour and will never make you forget that you are in the midst of water. All these features give Ø House an unworldly sense of serenity. And all this while you are surrounded by the energy of one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities, which is right at your feet.
