At the East African Kisawa Sanctuary, you will be immersed in a warm, soothing atmosphere with a touch of luxury and finesse. In this unique island resort, environmental conservation meets a celebration of culture.
The recent Kisawa Sanctuary is a luxury hotel and bungalow resort on the island of Benguerra in Mozambique and opened its doors in November 2021. This impressive resort is the perfect blend of coast and forest, luxury and relaxation and even supports marine research and conservation. Kisawa's mission is simple: to bring together wilderness and wellbeing, and to do so in a cautious but comfortable way and from the heart. The resort was founded by creative director Nina Flohr who today, with a passionate team of 220 people, aims to make a positive impact on both visitors and residents of Mozambique and its nature.
The resort consists of 22 bungalows spread over 12 residences. You will find some more quietly located on the bay, or sheltered in the dunes by the ocean, some closer to the forest. Besides adventure, there is also plenty of opportunity for relaxation. Indeed, the resort offers a comprehensive package of wellness options. Design, of course, played a major role in setting the mood and ethos of the resort. In fact, the agency that took it in hand, NJF Design, was specially established in 2019 in response to the exceptional design requirements in the construction of Kisawa Sanctuary. ‘NJF Design specialises in largely sustainable solutions that are optimistic in colour, authentic in heritage and abundant in energy. It has always been the intention to reduce impact wherever possible,’ we hear from the studio. The interior and architectural design of the resort became ‘a crucial part of Kisawa's DNA, with careful decisions being made to protect the surrounding nature by blending in, rather than interrupting, the local landscape’.
Not interrupting the landscape, but merging into it
The interior of the bungalows was given a warm, cosy and refined look with the necessary luxurious touch. You will find unique works of art and antique pieces from all over Africa. Thanks to the locally made furniture, there is an authentic feeling of place and connection with nature and the environment. This also greatly supports local craftsmanship and reduces the ecological footprint, as nothing has to be imported by plane, for example. Everything is nicely balanced by a sober, but soft and warm palette of beige, brown and orange tones that are also inspired by the environment.
The Kisawa Sanctuary showcases a unique approach to craftsmanship and hospitality designed to create work for as many residents of the region as possible. The work of local craftsmen is proudly displayed, combined with innovative construction methods and modern techniques. This resort is not only a beautiful celebration of Africa's rich cultural history, but also a tribute to nature. Want to get enchanted by more impressive projects and inspiring architecture?
