The best renovations honour the past. At least, that is exactly what interior design studio Studio&Space did with this 1970s home in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The result is an inspiring transformation that looks ahead to the future while giving you a glimpse into decades gone by.
Studio&Space was founded in 2020 by interior designer Maike Borst. Her mission is to make the world a more inspiring and thoughtful place through her work. The studio takes on both residential and commercial projects and has local as well as international ambitions. The foundation of every concept, however, remains translating the client's wishes into a unique design that is the best possible from both afar and close up. This was undoubtedly achieved in the renovation in question. This 265 square metre house felt outdated, and it was. Therefore, the client wanted to transform the house into a family home that is ready for the future and has a touch of glamour. Her love for the seventies combined effortlessly with the style and taste of the studio itself. A match made in heaven, in other words.
In order to overcome the awkward partitions on the ground floor, the studio decided to strip the ground floor and open it up to the garden. This made an open kitchen and dining room possible, both of which have a considerable surface area. The kitchen is made of warm alder wood and centres around a large island with beautiful curves. From the wooden folding window, you look out on an outdoor bar where you can spend long summer evenings. When you look around in the living area, successful references to the seventies are unmistakable. The wooden panels and terrazzo-like floors catch the eye, as does the sunken seating area. To avoid the interior becoming too dull or stereotypical, Maike Borst incorporated light colours and round shapes to make it fresh and timeless. The micro-cement surfaces also contribute to this.
Light colours and round shapes avoid that the interior becomes too stereotypical.
The furniture became an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary pieces that together sing perfectly on the same pitch. The selected works of art and decoration have a similar variety; the large white mirror, together with the nearby armchair, immediately draw the attention; for example. The magnificent blending of furniture and interior gives the ground floor a cosy feel that feels homely and yet makes your mouth water. The warmth you experience downstairs continues undisturbed upstairs. In these rooms, rich upholstery, shag carpets and brushed brass fittings provide a luxurious touch. In the bathroom, the custom-made wooden cabinets and Ceppo di Gre tiles are a pleasant reminder of the seventies. Finally, in the bedrooms you will find ultimate tranquillity through the soft tones on the walls and the round contours of the bed. With this renovation, Studio&Space proves that the outside of a house is not always representative of the treasures you find on the inside. This house from the 1970s has been completely redecorated and is, thus, ready to be a vibrant family home for decades to come, making the charm of the past more tangible than ever.
