A traditional old granary in beautiful green surroundings, topped with an impressive interior: that's all we needed to fall in love with Granary House in Arouca, Portugal. You won't forget a holiday stay in this unique setting soon.
Imagine waking up to the sound of a rushing river and birds chirping. At Granary House, that dream really does come true. A granary was completely converted for this holiday home. The granary is a traditional building from the area that has slim proportions and a lot of potential for reinterpretation. The green surroundings overlooking a river also capture the imagination. All the elements were present to turn this into a unique guest house.
It was important to preserve the essence of living
The house has many strengths. First, of course, the attention goes to the roof, which is typical of the region and made by reusing old slate from local ruins. The slender volume and dark slatted wood contrast nicely with the cliff and offer a minimalist and rustic reinterpretation of the traditional granary. The facade cladding in a delicate dark wood slat and its subdivision into sliding wooden shutters on the south side transforms the facade into a living and changing element.
For the interior, inspiration was taken from well-known names such as Peter Zumthor, Studio Mumbai, Herzog & de Meuron, and Vincent van Duysen. Above all, it was important to preserve the essence of living: simplicity and tranquillity are central here. The design was therefore deliberately kept simple, while serene, natural tones were chosen for the colours. The abundance of wood inside also reinforces the unity of the concept. Inside and outside thus become a consistent whole. Furthermore, beige microcement was chosen, which emphasises the warm atmosphere and is further enhanced when the fireplace is lit. Black metal details offer a sophisticated touch, for instance in the spiral staircase in the living room, which is a striking element. In the bedroom, on the other hand, the high ceiling gives you a sense of grandeur. The narrow balcony in front of the bedroom flows into a terrace with integrated benches and a swimming pool.
This beautiful holiday home is the ideal place to unwind and escape from busy daily life. Nature and simple yet thoughtful architecture offer the perfect opportunity to recharge.
